ABC video Who was John O'Quinn

Here is a short video of an interview with

John O'Quinn at the Keels & Wheels Concours at Seabrook, TX May 4, 2008.

gsriley1

This is one of my favorite videos, it shows a another side of him. You can clearly hear the joy in his voice and you can hear the smile on his face as he talks about his car collection and some of his favorites. He talks about memories of him and his father going to his first car show. He decribes how even as a young boy he understood how special the cars are that were behind the velvet ropes. His father loved the Duesenberg and John O'Quinn ended up with one of the most fabulous Duesenberg collections ever. he was planning on building a car museum in Houston and the excitement from that comes through in his voice as well. You also hear him ask Darla a question towards the end of the video (with 'pet names') which kind of made him human to me.

O'Quinn's car collection
John O'Quinn was an avid collector of classic cars. He owned more than 600 cars, worth more than $100 million, including a Batmobile and a 1975 Escort once driven by Pope John Paul II before he was named pope.

Prominent Houston attorney John O'Quinn was one of two men who died this morning when their SUV slammed into a large tree on Allen Parkway after the driver apparently lost control, police said.
"I'm stunned. The community lost one of its biggest assets," said Rick Laminack, who worked with O'Quinn from 1987 until 2006. "He was a great lawyer who shared a lot of his wealth with people who needed help."
It wasn't immediately clear whether O'Quinn or the other, still-unidentified victim was driving.
Around 8 a.m., the driver of a black Suburban heading west in the 2000 block of the parkway just west of downtown Houston skidded across the median, oncoming lanes and another median before the vehicle slammed into a tree, which was uprooted, said Houston police Lt. L.J. Satterwhite.
O'Quinn and the other victim were dead at the scene inside the mangled SUV, which ended up along the service road that runs along the south side of Allen Parkway. Workers had to chop down and remove the tree before towing off the Suburban.
Satterwhite said investigators are looking at possible causes, including excessive speed and rain-slicked pavement.
O'Quinn, who made his fortune largely in personal injury cases, most notably in successful breast implant cases in the early 1990s, was a local philantrhopist. He gave money to the Harris County Children's Assessment Center, the Houston Council on Alcohol and Drugs and various Texas Medical Center institutions including St. Luke's Hospital, which has a tower bearing his name..
The football field at the University of Houston's Robertson Stadium also is named for O'Quinn, a big UH supporter.
"Big man, big loss," Laminack said.
He also was a prolific giver to Democratic Party candidates. In the 2006 governor's race, he was the single biggest donor to Democratic nominee Chris Bell's unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Gov. Rick Perry. O'Quinn gave Bell $2.5 million.
O'Quinn gave more than $200,000 to Democratic candidates last year, and he donated $4,800 to Houston Mayor Bill White's U.S. Senate campaign.

update-Sarah's site reported that the law firm will have a news conf. this afternoon

UPDATE:
Prominent Houston attorney John O’Quinn was the man driving an SUV that lost control on the rain-slicked surface of Allen Parkway and crashed into a large tree, killing him and his passenger this morning, based on preliminary information gathered by crash investigators, police sources said.
The passenger was identified as Johnny Lee Cutliff, 56, of the 5300 block of Bacher. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, said the police sources, who asked not to be identified.
How fast O’Quinn, 68, was driving has not yet been determined because investigators must pull the vehicle’s crash data computer, or so-called "black box," to determine that information. But witnesses told police he appeared to be driving between 50 and 60 mph, a Houston Police Department spokeswoman said. The speed limit there is 40 mph.
The black late-model Chevrolet Suburban was westbound in the 1900 block of Allen Parkway at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred about 8 a.m., officials said.
Police said it appeared that the SUV veered to the left, jumped a curb and careened over a grassy median, crossed the eastbound traffic lanes and hopped another curb onto a second median before smashing into the tree on the south side of Allen Parkway. Tire marks across the first median show the path of the hurtling SUV.
The slick road could have contributed to the crash, said Houston Police Department Lt. L. J. Satterwhite. Persistent drizzle was in the area around the time of the crash.
The front end, hood, roof and passenger side of the Suburban were badly crumpled. The windshield was shattered and the engine appeared to hang from the chaise. The battery, air filter and other debris were scattered on the Allen Parkway service road about 20 yards west of the crash site.
The SUV appeared to have wrapped around the trunk and the force of the impact uprooted the nearly 30-foot tall, leafy tree, which was one of several lining the second median. The Suburban’s rear came to rest on top of the uprooted trunk, and the tree was cut down so the Suburban could be towed off.
The driver’s side air bag, splashed with what appeared to be blood, was deployed, as well as others around the vehicle.
Investigators and work crews were still at the crash site more than three hours after the wreck. Under light drizzle, workers sawed all the limbs from the tree and then pulled the SUV away from the scarred trunk. Then they dug out the tree, piled the limbs and trunk into a container truck to be hauled away.
Houston attorney Dan Cogdell said he was in Hobby Airport at 9:30 a.m. today and did not yet know of O’Quinn’s death when he heard an operator repeatedly paging O’Quinn, telling O’Quinn to report to a Southwest Airlines gate for departure. The operator paged O’Quinn for about 30 minutes, Cogdell estimated.
"It was very eerie," Cogdell said. "It seems to me they were holding a plane for him, which Southwest (Airlines) doesn’t usually do ... I thought it really strange that he would be flying commercial."
Cogdell said he later learned of O’Quinn’s death after his own flight was canceled and he returned to his office to see an announcement from the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association on the group’s list serve.
"Everyone is devastated,’’ said Neil C. McCabe, an attorney who worked with O’Quinn as he watched officials clean up the scene. "John not only was the head of the law firm but a person who took care of all of us and we are going to miss him very much."
While O’Quinn was "a lightning rod for controversy," he was always a gentleman, Cogdell said.
"In his day, he was an incredibly gifted trial lawyer," Cogdell said. "John was a controversial figure, but he was always a gentleman to me, and gave a lot to our community. Everybody’s just in a state of shock, even criminal lawyers."
Houston police said this morning's wreck is the sole fatal crash on the the entire stretch of the Allen Parkway so far this year.
HPD officials recorded no fatal wrecks on the Allen Parkway in 2008, 2007 and 2005. One fatal crash occurred in 2006 and six in 2004.

She got the tattoo days after Caylee disappeared, when she claims she was out looking for her daughter. Instead, the tattoo artist asked her where Caylee was and says Casey told him she was with a sitter and was just fine.
The tattoo "Bella Vita" means beautiful life in Italian.
“That is so bizarre and inconsistent with a desperate mother whose child has been taken by a third party,” Sheaffer said.
LEGAL ANALYSIS: Sheaffer On New Evidence
NEXT IN THE CASE AGAINST CASEY
In the case against Casey, she will be in court for a hearing next Friday on a number of issues.
The defense has asked the judge to throw out the murder charge against her and, if not that, to take the death penalty off the table.

Prosecutors say their motions are legally bogus.

Also, Friday it could become clear when Casey will stand trial on check fraud charges.

Defendants in Anna Nicole Smith case face hearing
By LINDA DEUTSCH (AP)

LOS ANGELES — Two doctors and the lawyer-boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith are due in court to hear what government witnesses have to say about their alleged roles in supplying drugs that killed the celebrity model.

A preliminary hearing for Howard K. Stern, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich is scheduled Tuesday before a judge who will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to order them to stand trial.
All three have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to illegally provide Smith with controlled substances.

The hearing is expected to take two weeks with a parade of witnesses including attorney general investigators, pharmacists, acquaintances of Smith and experts on the interaction of various drugs.

Attorney Adam Braun, who represents Eroshevich, said the evidence disclosed at the hearing may be surprising, but the outcome of the proceeding before Superior Court Judge Robert Perry is predictable.

"Preliminary hearings represent the lowest possible hurdle for a prosecutor to clear and are virtually impossible for a prosecutor to lose," he said. "If the prosecutors in this case somehow can't make it past the preliminary hearing, they should be laid off."
Braun said he was unlikely to call any witnesses of his own.

"Given the general futility of the exercise, Dr. Eroshevich will listen intently to the prosecutors' allegations and reserve her defense for maximum surprise at trial," he said.

The case will start with testimony from state attorney general investigators who probed the case for more than two years before a decision was made to bring charges.

Steve Sadow, the Atlanta attorney representing Stern, said he had not yet decided whether to call defense witnesses but would try to make his case through aggressive cross-examination. He expects some colorful witnesses, including the investigators.

Ellyn Garafalo, who represents Kapoor, said it was unlikely she would call defense witnesses at this stage of the case. But she said it was too early to discuss strategy.
District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons declined comment.

Smith died of a drug overdose on Feb. 8, 2007, in a Florida hotel room. Prosecutors call Stern an aider and abettor of the two doctors and allege that he obtained prescriptions for Smith under false names.

Search warrant affidavits suggest Stern put his name on prescriptions for opiates that were given to Smith, and claim 44 different medications were prescribed for Smith under a number of other names, including Stern's.

Stern is named in all 11 counts of the complaint. The doctors each face six counts, including conspiracy, and if convicted could be sentenced to as much as five years, eight months in prison.

It was not clear what sentence Stern might face if convicted.

Sadow has said outside court that his client should not be blamed for Smith's death because Stern was relying on the doctors to treat the former model, whom he said was recovering from an illness at the time of her death.

Anna Nicole Smith (a.k.a. Vickie Lynn Marshall; a.k.a. Vickie Lynn Smith)
10/08/09

Anna Nicole Smith, celebrity and model, was born Vickie Lynn Marshall in 1967. Her career was marked by controversy, especially concerning her marriage to billionaire J. Howard Marshall. Following Marshall’s death, Smith became involved in a number of court matters concerning her husband’s estate and other controversies. Some of these controversies are represented in the FBI’s files. She died at the age of 39 in 2007.

This release consists of three separate investigations:
9A-LA-2373359A-LA-237335-GJ
This file details an extortion investigation of someone who sent Ms. Smith a threatening e-mail.

The investigation took place between March and December 2004. The Assistant U.S. Attorney declined to prosecute.

Two files are included.

The release of file 9A-LA-237335, Section 1, consists of 33 pages released and 35 pages withheld.

The second file, 9A-LA-237335-GJ, consists of 10 pages released and 26 pages withheld. Material in these files was withheld to protect the privacy of persons and the secrecy of grand jury information.
49A-LA-22178
This case file concerns a bankruptcy fraud investigation that took place between 1999 and 2001. The release consists of 12 pages; 337 pages were referred to another government agency for release because the documents originated from that agency.
166C-LA-223601166C-LA-223601, 1A Volume 1166C-LA-223601, 1A Volume 2
The third matter regarding Ms. Smith that the FBI investigated was an allegation that she contemplated the murder of E. Pierce Marshall, the son of her deceased husband.

There are three sections to this release: 166C-LA-223601; 166C-LA-223601, 1A, Volume 1; and 166C-LA-223601, 1A, Volume 2.

This release consists of one section of investigative case file and two volumes of 1A envelopes.

1A envelopes contain case materials retained as evidence (in this instance, materials like interview notes), documents obtained from other police agencies, and other items gathered in the course of the investigation.

All of these files are redacted because of laws protecting personal privacy.

FBI Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide
09/25/09
The FBI posted its Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide (DIOG) on its website at http://www.fbi.gov/. The DIOG establishes the FBI’s internal rules and procedures to implement the Attorney General’s Guidelines for Domestic FBI Operations (AGG-Dom), which are posted on the Department of Justice’s website, http://www.usdoj.gov/.

These rules, which will be audited and enforced through a rigorous compliance mechanism, are designed to ensure that FBI assessments and investigations are subject to responsible review and approval and do not target anyone or any group on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, or the exercise of any other right guaranteed by the Constitution. The DIOG and the AGG-Dom were promulgated in late 2008 to ensure that the FBI is equipped with all lawful and appropriate tools so that it can transform itself into an intelligence-driven organization that assesses and investigates criminal and national security threats to our nation and its people. Both documents have been released to the public as part of an ongoing effort to assure the American people that FBI employees will carry out their mission according to an established set of rules and with full respect for the constitutional and statutory rights of the people.

The DIOG is a living operational guide and its release to the public is intended to provide as much transparency as possible. It will be reviewed and changed periodically, as law and policy change and as circumstances dictate. Because it does govern FBI operations and investigations, not all of its contents can be released as they provide too much of a road map to those who pose a threat to the nation. The FBI will, from time to time, reassess whether additional information can safely be released.

Casey Anthony Wants Murder Charge Dropped

ORLANDO, Fla. — Attorneys for a Florida woman charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter want to prevent prosecutors from seeking the death penalty and said Wednesday that charges against her should be dropped.

Casey Anthony's attorneys filed the motions a day after the State Attorney's Office released hundreds of pages of documents related to the case.

Anthony's attorneys said that prosecutors can't prove first-degree murder was committed or that Anthony ever abused her daughter, Caylee.

"Specifically, the state cannot establish whether Caylee Anthony's death was accidental, natural, or the result of an intentional or negligent homicide," they said.

The 23-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty and claimed that a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee.

The toddler's remains were found last December in woods near the home where she lived with her mother and grandparents. Although the death was ruled a homicide, a specific cause was never determined.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Anthony's parents released a forensics report that he said shows duct tape found with Caylee's remains doesn't match duct tape found at the Anthony home, key evidence in the state's case.

The forensics report released by attorney Brad Conway appeared to contradict an earlier report that had determined the tape on the skull and that found on gas cans at the Anthonys' house originated from the same roll of tape.
